Chemical App: Weed Control

Our chemical applications are offered in the spring and fall, where the weeds are most vulnerable to the chemicals that we use. Our spring session usually lasts from early May to mid-June, and our fall session takes place between mid-August and late October.

Our Chemical Blend:

We apply liquid form of chemical that consists of a broadleaf herbicide mixed with liquid fertilizer. The broadleaf herbicide kills any broadleaf weeds that it comes into contact with (clover, dandelions, thistle, etc). We mainly use the fertilizer to assist the impact of the chemical while moderately greening up your yard.

Frequently Asked Questions:

How long do I have to wait before I mow my lawn after the chemical application?

You should wait 24 hours in order to allow the chemical to have the greatest impact on the weeds in your yard.

How long should my children stay off the lawn?

The chemical is not a major concern after it has dried (45 mins to an hour), but you should wear closed toed shoes to avoid direct epidermal contact with the chemical the day it was applied.

How long should I keep my pets off the lawn?

Your pet should be safe to use the lawn after the chemical has dried, but we ask that you monitor your pet to ensure it does not lick/eat the grass the day an application has been made. Also it would be a good idea to clean off your pet's paws after walking on the grass. After 24 hours there is no risk for your furry little friend!

Granular Fertilizer App: Making the Grass Greener on YOUR Side of the Fence

Our granular fertilizer applications are offered in the mid-to-late summer, where we offer two applications, one in early July and another in early August. The early summer granular fertilizer application will lead to a lengthened period of green grass during the hot summer months by promoting root growth which reduces lawn stress. A late summer granular fertilizer application applied toward fall will also lead to a lengthened period of green in the fall, higher levels of energy reserves in the spring, and increased tolerance of summer stresses such a disease.

Frequently Asked Questions:

When can I mow after my fertilizer application?

You can mow immediately after the application, just be sure that you DO NOT bag the grass clippings when you mow. Bagging will pick up the granular fertilizer, preventing it from releasing nutrients into your lawn.

When is the lawn safe for my pet?

Similar concept as the chemical application, we ask that you clean off the paws of your pet(s) and monitor them to ensure they do not attempt to eat the granular pebbles.

How can I maximize the benefit of my application?

Clients usually maximize the impact of their fertilizer application by watering their lawn to activate the fertilizer. The fertilizer is in granular form and it is "time released" where it will not activate unless it comes into contact with water. Watering is also a good idea for this time of year because July and August are most often the driest parts of the summer. It is also important for clients to mow their lawn at NO LESS than 3 inches. This will allow root growth to expand deeper into the soil and help your turf to sustain itself during the dry and brutal heat of the summer!

Our Recommendation:

It is not uncommon for the climatic weather in Northern Minnesota to produce problems with dandelion, clover, and various other weed varieties. For these problems, a combination broadleaf chemical application along with the granular fertilizer applications are recommended to assist in enhancing turf health and reducing weed growth. Regularly scheduled fertilizer and weed control applications will greatly reduce, and more often than not , eliminate reemergence of weeds creating a healthy lawn.

Aeration

Aeration is the process of punching holes into your lawn which allows water, oxygen, fertilizers, and other nutrients to penetrate the soil and reach the roots of your grass

How often your lawn needs aerating depends on how compacted the soil is. Typically, the more clay you have in your soil, the more compaction occurs. When a lawn is heavily compacted, its roots do not get the air they need to live. Aerating also allows water and nutrients to reach the roots of your grass and it helps to reduce the amount of thatch. If you have poor soil, you should generally aerate twice a year. If you have good to average soil, you should typically aerate once a year.

We highly recommend lawn aeration. Annual aeration will cultivate your lawn soil to provide your lawn with the best possible growing conditions. Aeration is not permanent - the plugs dry and break up, filtering back to the many holes they come from. Most golf courses and professional athletic fields are aerated at least annually. They are in the business to look good and their groundskeepers know that repeated aeration will give their turf areas the best chance for maximum health.

We aerate most lawns in the early spring. Aeration early in the growing season allows the root system plenty of time to multiply into thicker undergrowth, resulting in a thicker top growth. This gives your lawn a chance to become thicker, healthier and greener faster than aerating during the hot summer months. Fall is also a good time to consider aeration because the plants root system naturally multiplies at this time.

Our Z-Plug Aeration machine will plug the soil of your lawn approximately 3 inches deep, leaving behind soil pellets that will dissolve in a few weeks (depending on rain).

Slit Seeding

Pricing:

Clients interested in  Slit Seeding should call for pricing. Cost largely depends on the poundage of grass seed used to improve the condition of the lawn, and the size of the lawn (per 1,000 sq ft).

Slit Seeding is the process of opening small grooves in the ground so that grass seed can be be applied directly to the soil without tilling. Slit Seeding serves as a great method to fill in the patchy areas or thin spots on your lawn.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What can I do to ensure grass growth after the Slit Seeding has been completed?

LEAVE THE TREATED AREA ALONE COMPLETELY! The ONLY thing you need to do is water the treated area. The common mistake people make is mowing too early, where any seed that has begun to germinate is ripped out from the ground and destroyed. We understand that long shaggy lawns are tough to look at, but the wait will be worth it in the end!

How much should I water the area that was seeded?

We generally recommend placing a sprinkler on your lawn near an ice cream pale, and running the sprinkler until 1 inch of water has collected into the pale. Repeat this process until the total treated area is complete. This should be done 3-4 times a week to ensure that your newly applied seed is getting the water that it needs! (you can obviously skip or reduce watering sessions when it rains)

Can I still receive the chemical application after my Slit Seeding application?

When a customer has received a Slit Seeding application, we will skip chemical applications that fall within the same period as the seeding. A chemical application would damage/destroy the grass seed that was applied to the treated area. Yes this means you will have to look at weeds for part of the summer, but patience will pay its dividends in the end.

Grub Control

Grubs are the larvae form of beetles that dwell in the ground and feed on the roots of your lawn. Although the presence of grubs can be common, too many within a given area can be a major problem to the health of your lawn. We offer a granular pesticide application that can slow down existing populations of grubs on your lawn and prevent the presence of future populations by eliminating their reproductive capabilities. Because the pesticide is in granular form, the customers who receive this application are expected to water the application area to activate the chemical.

How can I tell if I have grubs damaging my lawn?

There are a handful of strategies that help with identifying grubs as the problem:

We generally offer our grub control application between the beginning of May to mid-June, before the new batch of grubs hatch for the season. We use preventative control methods, where our chemical will target the eggs and newly hatched grubs, while still weakening the older population of grubs in your lawn. Our preventative pesticide has a longer residual effect than most other pesticides, where the chemical will continue to target grubs for nearly 3 months (from June till the end of August). We apply our preventative pesticide to the WHOLE lawn so your yard will be fully protected from future invasions! This modernized method of grub control selectively targets insects within the soil and is not hazardous to humans, pets, birds, or the environment.
